Important information on COVID-19 for British Council customers and partners

Following recent directives from the Malawi government, the British Council has limited our operations with several restrictions in place until further notice. They are as follows:

Examination services


At the British Council, the health and safety of all our staff and customers is our top priority.

In compliance with the latest directive from the Malawi Government all IELTS tests scheduled to be delivered by the British Council in Malawi on 4, 18 and 25 April have been cancelled. 

All test takers have been informed about the IELTS test cancellation.

Refunds and Transfers

We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this has caused our test-takers, who we know have been working so hard in preparing for the IELTS exam. We know what a huge disappointment this must be, and are working hard to offer as much support as we can in this challenging time. 

We are monitoring the situation closely and will recommence testing as soon as allowed by Malawi authorities.  We remain committed to fulfilling our responsibility of delivering examinations to the best of our ability, while prioritising the welfare of our customers, staff and community at all times.

 Professional and university exams

The following examinations have been cancelled: 

  • Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS May 2020 session) both Paper Based and Computer Based exams
  • ACCA on demand (F1-F4 that take place every Wednesday at our office)
  • Chartered Institute of Insurance (CII) exams that were scheduled for April 2020
  • University of London exams scheduled for March 2020
  • University of Leicester exams scheduled for May 2020
  • Royal School of Physicians scheduled for the 26 April 2020

Exam FAQs

Will my scheduled tests still hold as planned?

Following the directives of the Malawian government and to protect the health of our test-takers throughout the nation, all tests except the CBT and Pen and Paper ACCA scheduled for June have been cancelled for the time being.

Must test-takers apply for a refund or can one leave the application until the British Council resume activities.

Due to the current uncertainty caused by the novel COVID-19 outbreak, we have provided the option for either a transfer or refund. Kindly send an email to us at or with your preferred option.

Does the 25% fee apply to a refund requested because of the global pandemic?

For all University of London candidates who paid the exam center fees for May/June exams at either of our centres and have been advised by the school that their tests will be administered online a 15% administration fee will apply.


Will there be a delay in the collection of hard copy TRFs

Due to the current Covid-19 emergency our offices in Blantyre and Lilongwe are temporarily closed. Therefore the collection of hard copy TRFs will be delayed until we can resume work at our ffice premises again. We kindly ask for your understanding. 


How long will this examination suspension be on for?

We are following government directives that has resulted in the suspension of all exam activity. Once the restrictions are lifted, we will resume operations. In the meantime, please provide us your names and the exam you are interested in. We will get back to you when things normalise.
